Hip pain and problems are a fairly common issue in dogs and is usually caused by hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is when the hip ball and socket joint isn’t formed correctly resulting in bone rubbing on bone and subsequent arthritis changes. This can be painful for your dog. So how can you tell if your dog has hip pain?

Here are some signs of hip pain you should look out for

  1. Excessive panting.
  2. Reluctance to climb stairs or difficulty getting into the car.
  3. Sudden aggression or antisocial behaviour.
  4. A drop in performance if you partake in a sport with your dog.
  5. Behavioural changes.
  6. Excessive grooming.
  7. Postural changes or loss of muscle to the hind end.
  8. Barking and whining.
  9. Yelping or discomfort when the hip joint or hind end is touched.
  10. Limping or running with a ‘bunny hopping’ gait.
  11. Stiff movement in the rear especially during or after exercise.
  12. Reluctance to climb stairs or difficulty getting into the car.
