Here we look at; Why Your Dog Gets Aftercare; Immediate and Long-Term Aftercare. This is part of our series on Dog Chiropractors.

After your dog has had their chiropractic treatment I will often give you some aftercare to do at home in between sessions. What is this and why do you need to do it?

Why Your Dog Gets Aftercare Advice

Each case is unique, so I develop individualised programs of treatments that are most beneficial for your dog. Typically, there is a series of treatments based on your animal’s needs until the dog has fully recovered from its condition.

I always recommend a maintenance treatment program. Depending on your dog’s issues, age and pre-existing conditions this can be anything from every 1 to 6 months.

Immediate Aftercare

I will give you some advice for you to carry out over the next few days with your dog. This advice is given as your dog may be a bit stiff the following day and will need 24/48 hours to adjust to the treatment. This advice typically includes:

  1. Limited exercise for 48 hours
  2. Only lead walks
  3. No playing with toys or other dogs
  4. No running up and down stairs
  5. Being lifted on/off the sofa or in/out of the car

Long-term Aftercare

Some of the advice above may need to be carried on for several weeks or until my next visit. There is also some aftercare advice I give for long term benefits. These include:

  1. Management advice such as non-slip mats
  2. Specific stretches
  3. Specific exercises
  4. Other forms of therapy, such as hydrotherapy
  5. Referral back to the vet

Please try your best to follow the aftercare I give you as it will ensure your dog gets the most out of their session and that they will improve more quickly. Prevention is better than a cure and animals should continue to have treatments even if there are no outward signs of discomfort.
