Here we look at horse chiropractic aftercare; Why You Get Aftercare Advice for Your Horse; Immediate and Long-Term Aftercare. This is part of our series on Horse Chiropractors.

After your horse has had their chiropractic treatment I will often give you some aftercare to do in between sessions. What is this and why do you need to do it?

Why You Get Aftercare Advice for Your Horse

Each horse is unique, so I develop individualised programs of treatments and aftercare that are most beneficial. Typically, there is a series of treatments until your horse has fully recovered and then a maintenance program will be devised and your horse should receive a treatment every 3 to 6 months.

I will give you some aftercare to do with your horse. This may include management advice, exercises, specific massage and stretches. Please try your best to follow the aftercare I give you as it will ensure your horse gets the most out of their session and that they will improve more quickly.

Immediate Aftercare

I will give you some advice for you to carry out over the next few days with your horse. This advice is given as your horse may be a bit stiff the following day and will need 24/48 hours to adjust to the treatment. This advice typically includes:

  1. Limited exercise for 48 hours
  2. No riding for a day or two
  3. Ensuring they are warm
  4. Ensuring they have plenty of fresh drinking water

Long-term Aftercare

Some of the advice above may need to be carried on for several weeks or until my next visit. There is also some aftercare advice I give for long term benefits. These include:

  1. Management advice
  2. Specific stretches
  3. Specific exercises
  4. Other forms of therapy, such as hydrotherapy
  5. Referral back to the vet

Please try your best to follow the aftercare I give you as it will ensure your horse gets the most out of their session and that they will improve more quickly. Prevention is better than a cure and animals should continue to have treatments even if there are no outward signs of discomfort.
